Facility Use Policy Back to Top

We ask that you leave the facilities and grounds in better condition than you found them. Please empty trash cans to the nearest dumpster and replace any trash bags necessary. Any restroom and shower facilities that you used should be cleaned as well. Groups that do not leave their area(s) in an acceptable condition may be charged a cleaning fee up to (or equal to) the cost to reserve that facility for one day.

Camp Use Policy Back to Top

Welcome to our camp!  We are excited to have you join us for an outdoor adventure and ask that you review the guidelines below to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone. Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the procedures and policies so that your stay is pleasant and worry-free.

Check-In:    For weekends, check-in starts on Friday at 5pm.  Upon arrival at camp, please proceed directly to your camp site. The Camp Master will come around early Friday evening to collect your roster and provide you with their contact information and to answer any questions.  Maps of the camp and camp site locations can be found on the bulletin boards located throughout the camp.  Please note: The volunteer Camp Master does not normally stay in camp but is in on-call status and can be reached by phone to provide information or to come down an provide any assistance your group needs.

For groups arriving Monday – Thursday, the camp caretaker will coordinate with your group’s listed point of contact to arrange access to the camp and your reserved facilities.

Vehicle Use/Parking: Upon arrival, vehicles may drop off equipment near their camp site but must stay on the gravel roads. Each group is allowed to drop off a trailer in the turnaround near Shelter 3, the lot next to Williams Lodge, the main parking lot by Eagle Lodge and at the turn around near the flag poles next to Big Turtle 1 and 3.  For the safety of our Scouts, All Vehicles must be parked in the Eagle Lodge parking lot after unloading and are not permitted in camp areas outside the parking lot until departure.  Trailers will be allowed in Gilwell, Big Turtle and the Yurt fields when ground conditions/weather permit, as determined by the Camp Master.  Please consult with the Camp Master for mobility needs or disabilities

Check-Out: A Scout is Clean.  We ask that you leave the facilities and grounds in better condition than you found them.  This includes common areas such as shower-houses, KYBOs and fire rings.  Left over firewood should be stacked inside the tree line to facilitate mowing.  Please notify your Camp Master of any damage or maintenance concerns.  Contact the Camp Master for resupply of soap, paper products, and trash bags for the shower house and Eagle Lodge restrooms.  Dumpsters can be found in the main parking lot and next to the Eagle Lodge.

Equipment & Supplies: Thank you for returning all equipment/tools/furnishings/etc. to their original locations. If you are uncertain of the correct home for gear, please ask.  Camp Masters can sign out tools and equipment upon request.

Firewood and Campfires: Thank you for building your fires in designated campfire rings only, or approved portable fire rings on legs, and nowhere else.  Please use available firewood (a stack is located next to the amphitheater) and gather any tinder/limbs needed from the area around your campsite.  We appreciate your help in preventing the spread of invasive insects by NOT bringing outside firewood onto Camp Property that is not kiln-dried and obtained from a reputable source.  Kroger, UDF, and other vendors near camp offer appropriate firewood bundles for purchase. Note: Chainsaw use is not allowed.

Water, Restrooms & Showers:  Green potable water spigots located next to the Maintenance shelter in the parking lot, by the Eagle Lodge dumpster, and next to the Yurts have water available year-round.  Non-flushing latrines (KYBOs) located throughout camp are available year-round.  The restrooms in the Eagle Lodge and the shower house will be open and available on weekends and for special events.  Please note, the shower house is not heated, therefore from late October to approximately mid-April, it will be winterized and unavailable for use.

Yurts: The yurts are equipped with six bunk beds, one eight-foot table, folding chairs and a portable privacy screen (for adults/scouts sleeping in the same space).  In addition, there is a high efficiency wood burning stove (instructions for use and cleaning are posted next to each stove).  Firewood is not provided.  The stoves require well-seasoned firewood, and the group will need to bring their own kiln dried fire wood (see campfires) since the camp’s firewood is often too large and is not dry enough (green).  Open flames and cooking of any kind are not allowed in the yurts.  Fires are not allowed within 100 ft of the yurts.

When checking out, please clean the yurt; fold the chairs up; clean the stove out (ashes shall be placed in the Big Turtle 1 camp site fire ring and drowned there so they are cold to the touch); the skylight left open to prevent condensation and mold when not in use; and the door locked.

Maintenance or Supply Needs:  See something at a DBC camp that needs some love and care?  Help to make us aware of the items you see needing attention so that we can keep the property in tip-top shape for all our guests.  Please go to https://danbeard.org/fix/ to report an issue.

Emergencies or Scout Safety issues: Emergency information and council/camp points of contact are posted throughout the camp, to include nearest urgent care, hospitals or Scouts First Help line information.  In the event of severe weather, the Shower House is FEMA rated as a Tornado Shelter.

IMPORTANT: Report all emergencies immediately to 911.  These include emergencies for health, fire, flood, downed power lines, etc.  Then inform the appropriate camp/council point of contact.

AED: Available in the Eagle Lodge restroom hall.

Telephone/WiFi: Due to poor cell phone coverage at Camp Michaels, there is a telephone available on weekends for use in the Eagle Lodge restroom hall.  WiFi is available for Calls, Texts and Weather information.  Streaming is not available in the fields.  The password will be supplied by the Camp Master.

Flash Flooding: Big Turtle 1-3, the riverside half of Gilwell, and the bridge out of the main parking lot toward Shelter 4, Williams Lodge, Shelter 3 and Gilwell are prone to flash flooding.  Please take appropriate action and move out of these areas if there is a flash flood watch or warning.

**Fireworks, firearms, pets, nicotine products, controlled substances, and alcoholic beverages shall not be brought onto Camp Property.
**The Guide to Safe Scouting applies to EVERY group, event, and activity.
