This historic ranch-turned-Scout facility is the Capitol Area Council’s largest and most unique property. The tract is one of the last intact Republic of Texas Land Grants (issued between 1836 and 1845) in the state. The original grant was for a “league and a labor”(approximately 4,605.5 acres) given to Texas Declaration of Independence signer William Clark Jr. by Sam Houston. Later, additional land was purchased to bring the total size to 5,000 acres. The Griffith family was famous for its crossbreeding of Texas cattle, and the last owner and ranch operator was Mary Lavinia Griffith. She was inducted into the Texas Women’s Hall of Fame for both her philanthropy work and ranching involvement.
The ranch also is home to one of the last populations of the endangered Houston Toad. Throughout spring, toads sing under the towering loblolly pines in the numerous ponds on the property. Beyond that, turkey, deer, coyote, bobcat and pine warblers can regularly be seen across the camp. In 2011, the Bastrop Complex fire burned vegetation over approximately half of the property. As a result the camp has developed an amazing variety of micro ecosystems within forest, rolling plains and ponds. Click here watch a video about Lost Pines Ecotone or here to view a list of species you might encounter while at the camp.
Camping is primitive style, with no defined campsites, restrooms or drinking water and no on-site ranger. Campers must bring all supplies needed for their visit and practice Leave No Trace while camping (more information available at https://lnt.org/why/7-principles/). Popular activities at Griffith include Wilderness Survival campouts, hiking, backpacking and Philmont shakedowns. Units with properly-trained personnel can take advantage of the High COPE course. Regardless of Council affiliation, Scouts and approved non-Scout groups can camp on the property.
Please make sure to read the check in/out procedures and camp policies in the menu on the right side of the screen and keep an eye out for a reservation confirmation email (sent within 3 days of registration from no-reply@campingreservations.com).
